PlanetWare launches Travel Encyclopedia on the World Wide Web
The PlanetWare Travel Encyclopedia, the most comprehensive, searchable source of travel attractions data on the web, is now on-line at www.PlanetWare.com. The PlanetWare site helps travelers search for travel gems related to their special interests, provides visit decision details and serves as a one-stop source for making judgments about the relative merits of tourist attractions.
One highlight of the PlanetWare web site is the over 4,500 high-quality photos which help users select destinations visually. The photos cover every aspect of travel. As a bonus, PlanetWare permits those planning trips or students doing school projects to incorporate these images in printouts, provided credit is given to PlanetWare and the photographer. The artistry and range of the photos is already gaining recognition.
The PlanetWare Travel Encyclopedia is probably the largest site of its kind on the Internet with over 110,000 pages of attraction data. While the bulk of data is available by monthly subscription at a cost comparable to that of a single paper tour guide book, about 10,000 pages are free. The free data includes all photos, complete details of a featured city of the month (currently 550 attractions of London, England with maps), lists of the top-rated sites, suggested walking and driving tour sequences, plus lists of the 8,000 towns currently featured on the PlanetWare site.
PlanetWare has built its own search engine to allow subscribers to select attractions categorized in 150 special interest or hobby groups, as well as by keyword. PlanetWare allows users to find every skiing opportunity, walking trail, collectible museum or building according to architectural style. Keyword searches find sites regardless of whether or not the searcher types accented characters. English or American spellings are equivalent so a search for theater finds theatre.
All PlanetWare maps are interactive. Cursoring over a map, shows attraction names. Similarly, rolling over a list of attractions names pinpoints each site on the map. Clicking either the name or the pinpoint on the map brings up attraction details.
Given the volume of data, over half a Gigabyte, and the busy lifestyle of travelers, PlanetWare focused on building its site for speed of operation and to work in all common browsers.
The site incorporates the renowned Baedeker series of guide books plus original PlanetWare research. The data is also published on a series of award-winning CD-ROMs. PlanetWare's most recent award is a Silver WorldMedal in New Media (Interactive Multimedia) Reference category by The New York Festivals, in January 2000.
PlanetWare web subscriptions are available to the public through www.PlanetWare.com for US$200.00/year or $20.00/month.
Note: Journalists wanting to review the PlanetWare Travel Encyclopedia may email Steinhart@PlanetWare.com for a complimentary month-long subscription. Please provide journalistic credentials.
