9/11 Recovery Workers Create Alliance Once Again on a Journey That Unites America

August 12, 2004 -- On a coast-to-coast, fourteen state, twenty-one city journey, a group of motorcyclists will roar through the United States as part of an effort to raise money and make a difference in the lives of children. What makes the event even more special is that it was organized by a group of motorcyclists who also happen to be rescue workers from Ground Zero in New York City. These rescue workers – brave men and women – including firefighters, police and EMS who put their lives on the line during September 11 and want to give back again. The tragedy had an impact on all American’s lives, but especially so for the rescue workers who so diligently worked at the site, surrounded by the devastation each day for months. Their shared experience of working at Ground Zero led them to search for a unified way to help others, especially children. This led to the organization of the Spirit of America Ride for Kids Worldwide.

While working together at Ground Zero, the founders of Spirit of America for Kids Worldwide met Father Brian Jordan, OFM. Struggling to make sense of the horror surrounding them, they were comforted by the sense of spirit that Fr. Brian offered on a daily basis. He was constantly at the site, helping raise the spirits of those who faced the indescribable tragedy.

“Father Jordan was truly a beacon of light in a dark place, always offering faith and comfort to the weary workers,” says Jim Miller, a Ground Zero rescue worker. “It makes us feel proud to pay back our respects to a man who helped us get through each day in the aftermath of September 11.”

The 3,600-mile cross-country motorcycle journey begins on August 28 in Napa, California and ends on September 11 in New York City, New York. Along the way, the ride stops in towns in Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania. For more information on the route and special events planned to commemorate the ride in each town along the way, check out the Web site
