ABC’s John Stossel Featured in Sundance’s Tree Room Author Series

Award winning journalist John Stossel has joined the line up of esteemed authors scheduled to appear as part of Sundance’s Tree Room Author Series. On June 5th Stossel, who is the author of “Give Me A Break: How I Exposed Hucksters, Cheats, and Scam Artists and Became the Scourge of the Liberal Media,” joins a group that includes Pulitzer Prize winner Ron Suskind, author of the “Price of Loyalty”; syndicated columnist David Horowitz, author of “Left Illusions: An Intellectual Odyssey”; Molly Ivins takes a sharp look at George W. Bush’s first term in “Bushwacked: Life in George W. Bush’s America”; former President Jimmy Carter talks about his Revolutionary war novel, “The Hornet’s Nest”; David Frum, former special assistant to George W. Bush, charts what’s next in the war on terrorism in “An End to Evil.” All events begin with brunch at 12:00 p.m. in the AAA Four-Diamond award-winning Sundance Tree Room, followed by discussion with the author and then a book-signing.
Stossel is best know for his work on ABC’s 20/20, where his weekly “Give Me a Break” segments take a skeptical look at contemporary issues that range from pop culture controversies to government regulations. As a result of the success of these segments, Stossel has explored contemporary issues in depth in a series of specials that include John Stossel goes to Washington, which takes a look at how government continues to grow; The Trouble with Lawyers, that takes a look at bogus lawsuits; Hype that explores how hype is used to sell everything from stocks to football players, among others.

Stossel has received 19 Emmy awards and has been honored five times for excellence in consumer reporting by the National Press Club. Other awards Stossel has received include the George Polk Award for Outstanding Local Reporting and the George Foster Peabody Award.

Stossel is a graduate of Princeton University and began his career as a researcher with KGW-TV in Portland, Ore. He later worked as a consumer reporter at WCBS in New York City, before beginning his career with ABC as a consumer editor at Good Morning America.

To bring these award-winning authors to Utah, Sundance is once again partnering with Books and Beyond, in Heber, Utah. “As an independent bookseller, we are delighted to partner with Sundance for the Tree Room Author Series,” said Karen Dallett, co-owner of Books and Beyond. “This allows us to bring highly-acclaimed authors and spotlight their unique ideas in a relaxed and intimate setting.”

Other authors scheduled to appear include:
May 1 Ron Suskind is a Pulitzer Prize winner and former Wall Street Journal senior national affairs reporter. Suskind currently writes for Esquire, The New York Times Magazine and other national publications. He will discuss his book “Price of Loyalty” which is a sweeping tour of the inner workings of the Bush Presidency, called one of the most secretive administration in modern times. The release of “Price of Loyalty” erupted our nation into a dialogue of political honesty and close examination.

May 22 David Horowitz is the host of the Emmy winning “Fight Back With David Horowitz” television series. He is also a syndicated columnist and talk radio host. Currently he is the President for the Center for the Study of Pop Culture. This book, “Left Illusions: An Intellectual Odyssey,” is a compilation of many of his works, both published and previously unpublished.

August 21 Molly Ivins is a three- time Pulitzer Prize finalist and has won numerous journalism awards, including a 1991 Headliner’s Award for best Texas column. Her column appears in 114 newspapers. In “Bushwhacked: Life in George W. Bush’s America,” Ivins looks at George W. Bush’s first term as president. As the only president in U.S. history to slash taxes and go to war simultaneously, Bush wins consistently low marks from Ivins for pursuing "crony capitalism" to its inevitably depressing extremes.

Sept. 4 Jimmy Carter is former President of the United States and founder of the Carter Center. “The Hornet’s Nest” is a Revolutionary War novel mixing historical and fictional characters as Carter tells the mostly untold story of the war in the southern colonies. The novel details the corruption that drove small farmers off their land so that slave-owners could build their plantations, the alliance between the British and Indian tribes against the settlers, the changing loyalties as war fortunes shifted and the battles at Savannah and Charles Town.

Sept. 18 David Frum, former special assistant and speech writer to President George W. Bush, is a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a contributing editor of National Review. “An End to Evil” charts the agenda for what’s next in the war on terrorism. Among the topics this
book addresses: why the US risks its security if it submits to the authority of the United Nations, why France and Saudi Arabia have to be treated as adversaries not allies in the war on terror and how our government must be changed if we are to fight the war on terror to victory- not just a stalemate.
