Cruise Critic Feature Details Rise in Low-Carb Cruising Options

“A cruise ship is the easiest place on the planet to stick to your diet,” says Laura Sterling, community manager of Cruise Critic, and a two year low-carb dieter who’s managed to shed 85 pounds – even while cruising. And last week’s announcement by Carnival Cruise Lines – that it’s incorporating low-carb dishes onto dining room menus – is the latest effort in the cruise industry to show how healthy it’s becoming.

In “Trendwatch: Cruise Lines Are Rapidly Adopting Low-Carb,” a new feature launched today on Cruisecritic.com, insight is offered on lines ranging from contemporary Carnival (the first to debut a low-carb option), to tradition-minded Holland America, to upscale Crystal, who plan to quickly follow suit.

Cruise trips may be a vacation option long known as one of the last bastions of gluttony, but the industry is in the midst of a more health-oriented dining evolution. Low-carb is the most recent; others, however, include menus offering heart-healthy, low-sodium, vegetarian and low-fat meal-time options. Some even offer dedicated spa cafes.

Cruise Critic, launched in 1995, is an interactive community of seasoned and first-time cruisers who enjoy the fun of planning, researching and sharing their love of cruising. The site has been honored by the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) with its Lowell Thomas Award. Cruise Critic features include cruise reviews on nearly 200 ships, cruise line profiles, destination packages and feature stories. Cruise Critic also delivers cruise deals and last minute travel bargains as well as late breaking cruise news to industry professionals. Cruise Critic owns the most heavily trafficked cruise message boards on the Web, with over 110,000 registered members.

Cruise Critic is part of an online travel network owned, operated and published by The Independent Traveler, Inc., a privately held New Jersey Corporation. Cruise Critic's sister site is The Independent Traveler.
