Norway Comes to San Francisco during Norway Day Festival

Norway Day, Inc., a non-profit organization, and The Royal Norwegian Consulate General announce the 12th Annual Norway Day Festival to be held May 8-9, 2004 at Crissy Field in San Francisco. Headlining this year’s festival is Norwegian platinum-selling artist, Sissel. The two-day festival will feature Norwegian foods, music, fashion, art, and over 50 vendors presenting their unique, one-of-a-kind handcrafted decor, fine arts and gifts.

The festival is Northern California’s annual celebration of Norwegian culture and heritage offering the 6,000 Norwegians and 40,000 people of Norwegian descent in the Bay Area to celebrate their heritage and introduce the San Francisco Bay Area to the Norwegian culture; 5,000 people are expected to attend this weekend-long event.

This year’s festival concludes with a concert featuring Sissel, the Norwegian-born singing sensation who mingles fresh new pop songs with classical melodies and operatic arias. Her voice is known to millions for the ethereal solos in James Horner’s Oscar-winning score in the Titanic. Sissel, who has performed alongside Placido Domingo, Josh Groban, and Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains, will perform at the Palace of Fine Arts on Sunday May 9 at 5:30 PM. “I am extremely excited to participate in this year’s Norway Day Festival in San Francisco,” said Sissel, making a special appearance at the festival to meet fans and autograph CDs. “We are very honored to have Sissel join us at this year’s festival,” added Are-Jostein Norheim, Consul General, The Royal Norwegian Consulate of San Francisco.

Entertainment at the festival includes live music by Norway’s best-known accordionist Gudney Dahlen, and a play by the Oslo based theatre company Teater Syklus called “In a Shop.” Visitors experience the diversity of Norwegian cuisine from traditional open-faced sandwiches, waffles, and chocolates, to the authentic Norwegian Beer HANSA, offering something for every taste.

Other activities include an art exhibit, dance performances, cooking demonstrations, a genealogy center, Kardemomme By, a life-size children’s fantasy town with crafts and puppet shows for children, and fashion shows featuring modern day designs from Norwegian designers Vivien Goa, Elisabeth Surdal, and others. A highlight will be the Vesterheim Norwegian - American Museum. The museum’s curator Tova Brandt will be on hand examining and discussing Norwegian antiques in a format much like the "Antiques Road Show." People are invited to bring their Norwegian rosemaling pieces to be looked at. The event held on Mother’s Day weekend is a great activity for the whole family.

“Norway Day is the largest Norwegian festival on the West Coast and we are thrilled to host this celebration for the 12th year,” said Arne Morkemo, President, Norway Day Festival, Inc.
