Bali Hotel Association On-Line Survey Gagues Industry's Perception

“Bali offers better value than many other destinations, is culturally rich and is an attractive destination that is salable,” according to 250 travel industry respondents. Bali Hotels Association (BHA) since February 2004 has conducted an on-line survey among worldwide travel industry members, to gather data on perceptions about Bali.

Survey respondents thus far have ranked Bali highly. Respondents are split down the middle on the Visa on Arrival issue: 54% say the visa will impact tourism arrivals while 56% say it will cause complaints (results as of 15/4/03). From February, free visa on arrival facilities were scrapped by the Indonesian government for all but ASEAN citizens. Limited three- and 30-day stay visas may be purchased on arrival for US$10 or 25, respectively, by nationals of 21 other nations.

Promoting the survey through distribution of postcards and contact with website subscribers, BHA aims to maintain statistics that help its association in project and marketing plans as well as create a foundation for lobbying efforts where necessary.

Of 250 respondents through mid-April, the percentages agreeing with the following statements about Bali are listed below:

Attractive, salable destination (99%)
Better value than many other destinations (98%)
A safe place to visit (97%)
Caters to the needs of international travelers (97%)
Culturally rich (96%)
Has enough attractions/activities for all types of people (96%)
Has improved as a destination in the past 2 years (86%)
Well promoted (84%)
Adheres to international business standards (79%)
Highly recommended for MICE (76%)
Concerned with the environment (70%)
Has international standard medical facilities (68%)
Should have travel advisory in place (66%)
Bali is clean (64%)

BHA continues to conduct the survey at balihotelsassociation.com and will award quarterly prizes of free stays in Bali to website visitors who register as newsletter subscribers. The first quarter’s winner, Garry Hines of New South Wales, Australia, was randomly selected from those who registered at the site between December 22, 2003, and March 31, 2004. Hines will enjoy a two-night stay at a member hotel.

Bali Hotels Association is a professional association of star-rated hotels and resorts in Bali. Members include general managers from 50 hotels and resorts, representing 12,275 hotel rooms and 18,000 employees in the Bali hotel sector.
