Have Pets, Will Travel

A new breed of VIP guests are checking into hotels and other accommodations, who are gladly ringing in the extra sales. Many lodgings will even cater to these VIPs with special treats, massages, luxury beds - or even a friendly pat on the head. That's right: doting pet owners, unwilling to leave their beloved animal companions behind, are travelling with their Very Important Pets in tow.

"People are crazy about their pets - they'll gladly spend money on all sorts of specialty pet products and services, such as doggie daycares, gourmet doggie treats, and even pet clothing. So it's really no surprise that people are eager to bring their pets along on holidays," comments Angela Wu, founder of the PET FRIENDLY Canada directory and owner of four pets.

Gone are the days where people have to sneak their pets into their rooms. Pet-friendly accommodations are now available to suit every taste and budget. Bed & Breakfasts, for example, are popular with guests who like that extra "personal touch" or a smaller, quieter setting. Luxury hotels and resorts provide pampering for their human guests, with some offering special packages for the visiting pooch, too. Lesser known is a type of lodging often called a "Bale, Bed & Breakfast" that will welcome guest horses. That's not all, though; pet-toting travellers can also choose from a variety of motels, chalets, cottages, vacation homes, and even spas.

Pet owners are advised to check with their friendly neighbourhood veterinarian to ensure their pet is fit for travel. Prepare for your trip well in advance to ensure your pet has all the proper documentation, vaccinations, identification, and supplies ready to go. Include familiar bedding, food, and toys to help keep your pet happy and comfortable.

It's strongly recommended to book pet-friendly lodgings in advance. Other travellers, anxious to bring their pets, are also searching for that perfect holiday getaway – which can mean stiff competition, especially during the busy summer months. It's a good idea, too, to confirm each lodging's pet policies prior to booking.

The PET FRIENDLY Canada community connects pet-friendly accommodations with the pet-loving public, and can be found on the web at www.PetFriendly.ca.
