American Cyclist Circles the Globe by Bicycle

After thirty-five countries and two years, author Scott Zamek describes his 20,000-mile bicycle journey through areas where common travelers rarely go. And it's easy to see why. Taken prisoner by the Syrian Secret Police, marooned in a Pakistani immigration camp, and stricken by hepatitis in China are just starters in his latest book, "One More Horizon: Ohio to Hong Kong the Long Way." The second half of the journey would bring Bengal tigers, angry mobs, hypothermia and heatstroke.

"I studied and read about all the areas of the world along my route," Zamek said, in an interview here. "But I learned more during the first two weeks on the road than I did as a result of all my research."

One lesson learned was not to leave your gear, even for a second. That mistake cost Zamek his bike and all his equipment during a rest stop in Italy. "That day was when I almost quit," he admits. Instead, Zamek bought some bottom-of-the-line gear and continued east. The remainder of the journey would find him imprisoned by the Pakistani government, facing the Sahara and Gobi deserts, and up against the Himalaya and Karakoram mountains.

Despite these hardships, the author gives us a unique insight into the people and places along the trail. Wether it's talking to tribesmen along the dangerous Afghan border, or negotiating the political red tape of Iraqi and Iranian bureaucracies, Zamek always seems to be where the action is. "One More Horizon" is an essential part of the travel kit for anyone planning to travel the hard way.
