New Beginnings

December 25, 2000, I was introduced to crocheting by a friend. Initially, I was awful. I couldn’t even crochet a straight line and had decided to give up. However, in describing to my spiritual mother what had occurred and how terrible I was, she said, “you can do it!” Then she began to teach me. As I learned more, I wanted to do even more than just afghans and shawls. In my quest to learn more I began to search on the Internet to see what others had done and came into contact with “The Rug Lady”, Sharen Stennett. There my quest for salvation was met. She told me about the different fabrics that one could use and the different needle size to get and I just went crazy crocheting! I crocheted every spare moment. As my friends and family saw what I was doing, they wanted a rug or a hat or sometimes even a prayer shawl. The more I crocheted the more people sought me out for my wares until I was selling what I was doing.

In the midst of doing this hobby, I was released from employment and began to crochet full-time. At the time, I didn’t know whether this “hobby” could become income enough to fill in for the employment that was now gone, but that is just what has happened. I have become so successful that at this point, almost everything I have crocheted has been purchased. So let this be an encouragement to you that even if you begin something and appear to be terrible at it, don’t give up. Continue at it until you master it and it might bring you joy and fulfillment as “Crocheting by Monica” has brought me. Visit my website at
