Canadian Outdoor Activities: Haliburton Forest Listed Twice in EXPLORE Magazine's '100 Things
Explore, Canada’s Outdoor Magazine, has compiled a list of the top 100 Canadian outdoor activities. Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve Ltd., found nestled in the scenic Haliburton Highlands in Central Ontario, has made the “100 Things you Have to do out There” list not once, but twice.
Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve Ltd. (http://www.haliburtonforest.com) is a unique privately-owned 60,000 acre outdoor wonderland that boasts many intriguing experiences and tours. Two very popular events are the renowned Wolf Centre and “A Walk in the Clouds” Canopy Tour -- both have made the top 100 activities list in Explore magazine.
Ranking #3 for Canadian outdoor activities is “Howling with Wolves” located at the Haliburton Forest Wolf Centre. In July of 1996, the Haliburton Forest Wolf Centre opened its doors to the general public and has revolved around the integration of sustainable resource management and use. Today the wolf pack is led by Ebony and Citka, the Alpha pair. Along with their siblings and offspring, they roam freely in a 15 acre enclosure, one of the largest of its kind in the world. Because the wolves are kept in their natural habitat, this provides the ideal location to research these animals and offers individuals insight into their behavior and character traits. In addition, the Wolf Centre provides an educational experience as it contains numerous exhibits, a small theatre/classroom, and a retail area featuring a wide selection of wolf related books, tapes and graphics. Furthermore, there is a large indoor observatory overlooking the enclosure, and an annual themed exhibit that is open to the public during the summer.
Another popular Canadian outdoor adventure activity is the “Walk in the Clouds” Canopy Tour which has been ranked #24 for Ontario’s wilderness adventures. From river basin to tree tops, the tour takes in the entire splendor that nature has to offer. The canopy tour begins at the Base Camp, the entrance point into the forest, in a 15-passenger van where knowledgeable guides introduce participants to the environment that is known as Haliburton Forest. The road ends, and a short hike begins along the scenic Pelaw River to the shores of MacDonald Lake. Here, adventures dawn lifejackets and paddles and board one of two Voyageur canoes to paddle their way across the lake to their final destination -- an old growth stand of White Pine trees on an undeveloped peninsula.
The canopy boardwalk is the ultimate highlight of the “Walk in the Clouds” Ontario wilderness adventure tour. The canopy boardwalk is over a half of a kilometer long, the longest of its kind, and winds through the tree tops approximately 20 meters above the forest floor. Two platforms, suspended from the tree tops above, become the gathering place where one can enjoy a leisurely tree top snack while the guide elaborates on the forest environment surroundings. A spectacular view across the lakes and forest becomes a fitting closure to the tree top tour.
